Sunlight:
Plant horseradish in a location that receives full sunlight to partial shade. It can tolerate some shade but prefers sun.
Soil:
Horseradish thrives in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. It is adaptable to various soil types but prefers loamy soil.
Planting:
Plant horseradish roots in early spring or fall. Ensure the crown is placed just below the soil surface. Plant in an area where it can spread, as horseradish can be invasive.
Watering:
Horseradish is relatively drought-tolerant. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Fertilization:
Horseradish doesn't require heavy feeding. You can add well-rotted compost or a balanced fertilizer in the spring to promote growth.
Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots from freezing in winter.
Spacing:
Plant horseradish with adequate spacing, considering its potential to spread. Proper spacing also aids in good air circulation.
Harvesting:
Harvest horseradish roots in late fall or early spring when they are at their peak flavor. Lift the entire plant and cut or scrape the roots. Leave some roots in the ground for future growth.
Pruning:
Trim back the foliage to ground level after the first frost in fall. This helps the plant redirect energy to the roots during winter.
Container Growing:
Consider growing horseradish in containers to control its spread. Use a large container with well-draining soil.
Herb pairings:
Horseradish pairs well with rich or fatty foods, capers, celery, chives, cream, dill, mustard, vinegar, yogurt, beef, fish, ham, potatoes and sausages.
Notes:
can be considered invasive
some prefer to grow in a pot verses in the ground
