Fruit Cocktail Shrimp Plant (Justicia brandegeana)
4 inch pot size with plant height between 6- 20 inches
The shrimp plant also known as the Mexican shrimp plant, is an attractive perennial known for its unique and eye-catching flowers. The shrimp plant gets its name from the long and arching flower spikes that resemble shrimp. The flowers are white and tipped with bracts that can be various shades; like red, orange, or pink. The foliage is generally dark green and lance-shaped.
Planting:
Plant in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter is ideal.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Shrimp plants like humidity.
Sunlight:
Provide bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can burn the leaves.
Fertilizing:
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season.
Pruning:
Prune to maintain a bushy, compact shape and to remove spent flower spikes. Pruning in late winter or early spring will help to rejuvenate the plant.
Temperature:
Shrimp plants prefer warm temperatures and are sensitive to cold weather. Protect them from frost.
Pest and Disease Control:
Monitor for pests like aphids or spider mites. Treat them as needed.
