Katuk (Sauropus androgynus)

Katuk is an evergreen perennial shrub native to tropical/subtropical Asia. In the right climate it reaches up to 8 ft tall with multiple upright stems full of dark green foliage. The leaves have a slight nutty, sweet flavor and are high in protein. Katuk (Sauropus androgynus), also known as sweet leaf, is a tropical perennial green leafy plant commonly grown for its edible leaves.

Sunlight:
Plant katuk in a location with partial to full sunlight. It prefers warm and tropical conditions.

Soil:
Provide well-draining, fertile soil. Katuk thrives in soil rich in organic matter. It can tolerate various soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist. Katuk appreciates regular watering, especially during dry periods. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture.

Temperature:
Katuk is sensitive to frost, so it's best suited for tropical or subtropical climates. Protect it from cold temperatures.

Spacing:
Plant katuk with sufficient spacing to allow for good air circulation. This helps prevent diseases and promotes healthy growth.

Fertilizing:
Katuk benefits from regular fertilization. Use a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer or organic compost during the growing season.

Pruning:
Regularly prune katuk to encourage bushier growth and to harvest leaves for culinary use. Pinch off the tips to promote branching.

Harvesting:
Harvest young leaves regularly for culinary use. The leaves are often consumed raw in salads or cooked as a green vegetable.

Pests and Diseases:
Katuk is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for common garden pests. Neem oil or insecticidal soap can be used if needed.

Container Growing:
Katuk can be grown in containers, especially in regions with colder temperatures where it can be brought indoors during winter. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
