Black Turmeric (Curcuma caesia)
Black Turmeric is a tender perennial plant that is part of the ginger family. They thrive in warm and humid climate. Root can be used as a blue dye. Turmeric requires patience, as it takes several months to grow and develop. With proper care and attention to its tropical preferences, you can enjoy harvesting your own turmeric for culinary and health purposes.
Color:
The rhizomes of black turmeric are purple to blueish color , which sets it apart from the yellow turmeric.
Appearance:
Similar to common turmeric, with large leaves arising from the ground and a spike of flowers. Leaves have a purple steak running down the middle of the leaf.
Climate:
Black turmeric thrives in tropical to subtropical climates with warm temperatures.
Sunlight:
Plant in a location with bright filter sunlight.
Soil:
Well-draining soil with rich organic matter is ideal.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist. Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
Fertilization:
Provide a balanced fertilizer during the growing season for healthy growth.
Spacing:
Plant rhizomes about 6 to 8 inches deep and space them a foot or so apart.
Harvesting:
Harvest the rhizomes when the plant is dormant, typically in late winter or early spring. Gently dig around the rhizomes and lift them from the soil.

Clean and store harvested rhizomes in a cool, dark place. They can be used fresh or dried.
