Florida Native Wild Garlic
Wild garlic is a perennial plant native to Florida, with a more pungent flavor when compared to common Chives. This plant creates small bulbs underground as well as tiny bulbous above ground.
Leaves:
Narrow, grass-like leaves that emerge from an underground bulb.
Stems:
Hollow stems that can reach varying heights.
Flowers:
Clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers that create bulbous once done flowering.
Bulbs:
Underground bulbs with a garlic-like flavor as well as bulbs created at the flower tips.
Location:
Plant in a sunny to partially shaded location.
Soil:
Well-draining soil is ideal. Wild garlic is adaptable to various soil types though.
Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods.
Harvesting:
Leaves and bulbs are both consider edible. Harvest leaves when needed, and the bulbs in late summer or early fall months.
Culinary Use:
Wild garlic is often used in cooking. It provides a mild garlic-onion flavor. Use it as you would common Chives or garlic chives.
