Florida Red Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum)

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is a tall, tropical grass cultivated for its sweet sap, which is used in the production of sugar. The stems can reach massive heights. Stems are called canes, and are filled with sugary sap. The leaves are long, narrow.

Planting:
Plant sugarcane in well-draining soil amended with organic matter.

Watering:
Provide consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Sugarcane requires more then normal amount of water for optimal growth.

Sunlight:
Sugarcane thrives in full sun.

Fertilizing:
Apply a balanced fertilizer. Additional applications of nitrogen during the growing season would be helpful.

Soil:
Rich well ammended organic matter soil that is well draining.

Harvesting:
Sugarcane is typically harvested when it reaches maturity, usually late fall. Harvest by cutting the canes at the base.

Disease Control:
Keep an eye out for diseases like rust, smut, or mosaic viruses. Practice good sanitation to prevent the spread of diseases.

Shipping from our nursery to you:

We ship on Monday & Tuesdays according to climatic conditions to ensure your plants arrive in a timely manner for proper care, without unnecessary time spent in their dark box.

Where we cannot ship to:

At this time we are not able to fulfill orders outside of the U.S. due to agriculture regulations.
We also do not ship to Hawaii or Alaska because of their distance from our nursery and the sensitive nature of the plants we ship.
