Greek Oregano (Origanum vulgare)

4in pot size

Oregano is a aromatic perennial herb in the mint family. Oregano is native to the Mediterranean countries and western Asia. The herb is an essential ingredient of Mediterranean cooking. Oregano has a strong aroma and a warm pungent taste.

Sunlight:
Plant oregano in a location with full sunlight. It prefers at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil:
Provide well-draining soil with a slightly alkaline to neutral pH. Oregano is adaptable to various soil types but performs best in well-drained, fertile soil.

Watering:
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Oregano is drought-tolerant once established, so be cautious not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

Spacing:
Plant oregano with sufficient spacing to encourage air circulation and prevent overcrowding. This helps minimize the risk of diseases.

Fertilizing:
Oregano generally doesn't require heavy fertilization. A balanced, all-purpose fertilizer applied in spring can be sufficient. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can lead to leggy growth.

Pruning:
Regularly prune oregano to encourage bushier growth and to harvest leaves for culinary use. Pinch off the tips to promote branching.

Harvesting:
Harvest oregano leaves when the plant is well-established, usually after 6-8 weeks. The flavor is most intense just before flowering. Cut stems as needed, and dry or use fresh leaves in cooking.

Pests and Diseases:
Oregano is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for issues like aphids or spider mites. Neem oil or insecticidal soap can be used if needed.
