White Horehound
White Horehound is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family. It's known for its distinctive woolly, white or grayish-green leaves and clusters of small white or pale pink flowers. The plant has a strong, bitter taste and is often used in herbal medicine, particularly for coughs and respiratory ailments.
Description:
-Leaves: Oval, wrinkled, and covered with dense, white, woolly hairs. The leaves are arranged oppositely on square stems.
-Flowers: Small, tubular, white to pale pink flowers bloom in dense, whorled clusters at the leaf axils. They typically bloom from late spring to mid-summer.
-Height: Grows to about 12 to 24 inches tall.
Growing Conditions:
- Climate: White Horehound thrives in temperate climates and is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy, or rocky soils but can tolerate a wide range of soil types, including poor, dry soils. It thrives best in alkaline to neutral pH soil.
- Light: Requires full sun for optimal growth. It can tolerate partial shade, but it may lead to leggy growth and reduced medicinal properties.
- Water: Drought-tolerant once established. It requires moderate watering, but the soil should be allowed to dry out between watering. Overwatering can cause root rot.
